Guatemalan inmates riot at three prisons, taking 46 people hostage

Inmates at three prisons in Guatemala rioted, taking at least 46 people hostage, mostly guards and a psychologist.

Interior Minister Marco Antonio Villeda reported no deaths or injuries among hostages. The riots were allegedly organized by the Barrio 18 gang, seeking better conditions for their leader.

Villeda stated, “I am not going to make any deals with any terrorist group,” emphasizing a refusal to negotiate.

This situation presents a higher number of hostages than in past incidents.

Security forces, including the army, are maintaining perimeter control and working to restore order.
