AI writing tools weaken neural connections
SUMMARY
A study assessed the cognitive costs of using large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT in essay writing. Participants were split into three groups: LLM, Search Engine, and Brain-only, and completed four sessions while their brain activity was recorded via EEG.
Results showed that the Brain-only group had the strongest neural connectivity, while the LLM group displayed the weakest engagement. Those using LLMs faced issues with ownership and memory recall.
The study indicates that while LLMs can be helpful, they may impair learning skills over time. Understanding AI's impact on education is crucial.
