Trump plans to attend Wednesday's Supreme Court hearing on his bid to limit birthright citizenship

SUMMARY

President Donald Trump plans to attend Wednesday’s Supreme Court oral arguments on birthright citizenship.

This would make him the first sitting U.S. president in history to observe proceedings at the nation’s highest court in person.

Trump’s official White House schedule lists the visit. The case centers on his executive order, signed on the first day of his second term, declaring that children born in the United States to parents who are illegally present or on temporary status do not qualify for American citizenship.

Lower courts blocked the policy nationwide. The Supreme Court is now hearing the administration’s appeal of those rulings.

Trump confirmed his plans Tuesday while speaking with reporters in the Oval Office. “I’m going,” he said. When pressed on attending in person, he replied, “I think so, I do believe.”

He had previously considered attending a different Supreme Court hearing last year on his tariffs but ultimately decided against it.

Trump has appointed three current justices — Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. He has described the Court as partisan between Republican and Democratic appointees.

The citizenship restrictions form part of Trump’s broader immigration crackdown.

A definitive ruling from the Supreme Court is expected by early summer.
