England facing drastic measures due to extreme drought next year

England is preparing for severe drought conditions next year, prompting the government and water companies to draft emergency plans. Water firms express concern over potential low rainfall this winter, predicting drastic measures “going beyond hosepipe bans.”

Currently, average reservoir storage is only 63.3%, well below the typical 76% for this time of year. Areas in Sussex and Somerset are particularly low. Experts warn that without enough rainfall, water shortages could lead to increased restrictions on usage.

Professor Hannah Cloke highlighted the need for "exceptional rainfall all winter" to recover. New reservoirs alone won't suffice; improving water efficiency in homes and businesses is crucial to address the growing demand and climate variability.
