Poland to recognize same-sex marriages from EU states

SUMMARY

A landmark ruling by Poland's Supreme Administrative Court now recognizes same-sex marriages performed in other EU countries. This decision follows a case involving a Polish couple married in Germany in 2018. Previously, their marriage was not acknowledged due to Poland's constitution defining marriage strictly as between a man and a woman.

The court stated that recognizing such marriages "does not violate national identity" or hinder Poland's family law autonomy. Rights groups estimate this ruling could affect 30,000 to 40,000 Polish citizens. However, there is still uncertainty about recognition for marriages from couples not residing long-term in another EU state. Poland remains one of the few EU nations without domestic same-sex union recognition.
