'scrapped'
Huge $10 billion wind farm planned for off Australia's east coast has been scrapped
SUMMARY
Plans for a $10 billion wind farm off Australia's east coast have been scrapped after the Norwegian company Equinor withdrew its support. The project, intended to generate 2,000 megawatts of electricity, would have been located near Newcastle and Port Stephens.
Equinor's decision came after the Albanese government granted a feasibility license for environmental surveys. Energy Minister Chris Bowen noted that Oceanex, the local partner, is too small to continue without a major collaborator.
Community members have expressed relief, fearing potential negative impacts on tourism and local fisheries.
