Australians to face age checks from search engines

SUMMARY

Australians using search engines like Google and Microsoft's Bing will soon undergo age checks when logged into their accounts, as part of a new online safety code. The eSafety Commissioner has mandated that these checks be implemented within six months to protect children online.

If users are considered "likely to be an Australian child" under 18, safety features will be set to filter explicit content. While checks won’t apply to users not logged in, those users will still see blurring on certain content. Non-compliance with these regulations could lead to significant fines.
