OpenAI co-founder wanted to build bunker to protect company scientists from 'rapture'

Ilya Sutskever, co-founder of OpenAI, proposed building a bunker for top researchers to prepare for potential chaos after the release of artificial general intelligence (AGI). During a 2023 meeting, he stated, “We’re definitely going to build a bunker before we release AGI."

This plan aims to protect scientists from geopolitical upheaval or violence anticipated with AGI's release. Sutskever's concerns reflect deep anxieties within OpenAI. He has expressed growing distrust towards CEO Sam Altman regarding the company's future and its safety protocols.

Despite these fears, the proposed bunker symbolizes the extreme beliefs held by some in the AI community about the risks of their technology.
