Judge temporarily blocks Trump's foreign student ban at Harvard
A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration's decision to revoke Harvard University's ability to enroll foreign students. U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs halted the revocation until a hearing can be held on May 29.
Harvard argued it would suffer "immediate and irreparable injury." The Department of Homeland Security had claimed that Harvard must stop admitting foreign students and that current international students face transfers or deportation.
Harvard filed a lawsuit, calling the government's action “retaliatory” and a violation of due process. A spokesperson stated the move threatens the academic mission and community at Harvard.
The battles followed Harvard's refusal to comply with demands to alter hiring, admissions policies, and diversity efforts. This latest crackdown on foreign students adds to a pattern noted under the Trump administration.
