Cherry Vann becomes UK's first female archbishop after election in Wales

SUMMARY

Cherry Vann has been elected as the UK’s first female archbishop and the first LGBTQ+ leader in the Church in Wales. Vann, the former Bishop of Monmouth, was chosen after an electoral college met following Andy John’s resignation amid safeguarding scandals.

Vann, who has a background in music and was ordained as a priest in 1994, was selected from five eligible candidates. Many in the Church of England see her appointment as a significant step toward modernization after years of controversy over gender and sexuality.

Vann will be enthroned at St Gwynllyw in Monmouth on a later date.
