Hegseth discussed running for political office in Tennessee, sources say
The U.S. Department of Defense refutes claims that Secretary Pete Hegseth is planning to resign for a Tennessee gubernatorial run. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated, “Hegseth’s focus remains solely on serving under President Trump.”
Two anonymous sources claim Hegseth discussed a potential campaign, including eligibility requirements, within the past three weeks. However, a person close to Hegseth said he was “very, very clear” that running is “totally off the table.” Tennessee’s GOP chairman, Scott Golden, noted no discussions about Hegseth’s candidacy have occurred.
Hegseth’s tenure has faced scrutiny, including allegations of misconduct and mishandling sensitive military plans via an unsecured Signal chat. A Pentagon inspector general’s report on the incident is expected soon. Despite controversies, Trump publicly supports Hegseth, though private frustrations have been reported.
Hegseth, a former Fox News host, may not meet Tennessee’s seven-year residency requirement for governor, having moved there around 2022. Parnell dismissed the reports as “fake news,” insisting Hegseth is committed to his role. No evidence confirms Hegseth’s intent to run, and close associates deny any campaign plans.
