Zelensky government sabotaged controls and enabled billions of dollars in corruption

SUMMARY

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's government is accused of undermining oversight mechanisms designed to prevent corruption, losing hundreds of millions of dollars in the process.

A New York Times investigation reveals that the administration placed loyalists in supervisory boards, delayed their establishment, and changed rules to limit oversight. The state-owned energy company, Energoatom, is at the center of these allegations, with officials accused of embezzling $100 million.

Despite these issues, Western allies continued financial support due to the ongoing war. Corruption threatens Ukraine's EU and NATO aspirations, with investigations leading to multiple arrests and the resignation of Energy Minister Herman Haluschenko.
