Purdue University approves new AI requirement
Purdue University will require all undergraduate students to demonstrate basic AI competency starting with the freshman class of 2026. This requirement is part of the AI@Purdue strategy, which focuses on learning, research, and partnership in AI.
Purdue President Mung Chiang emphasized the need for proactive engagement with AI in education. The competency will be tailored to each academic program, integrating AI skills without increasing credit hours.
Although the requirement begins in fall 2026, resources will be available for current students in spring. Purdue aims to prepare graduates to effectively use AI tools in their fields and adapt to future developments.
Provost Patrick Wolfe stressed the importance of industry input for continuously updating the AI curriculum. Schools are increasingly prioritizing AI education as demand for AI skills in the workforce rises.
