Paul Tagliabue, the NFL commissioner who ran the league for 17 years, dies at 84

SUMMARY

Paul Tagliabue, former NFL commissioner, died at 84 from heart failure complicated by Parkinson's disease. He served as commissioner from 1989 to 2006, succeeding Pete Rozelle and later succeeded by Roger Goodell.

Goodell expressed deep sadness, saying: "Paul was the ultimate steward of the game." Tagliabue's tenure saw economic growth, new stadiums, and successful television contracts, with no labor stoppages.

He implemented the "Rooney Rule" for minority hiring and strengthened substance abuse policies. Although criticized for his past comments on concussions, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020. He is survived by his family.
