Canada reports first human case of H5 avian influenza

SUMMARY

B.C. has reported its first case of H5 avian influenza in a human, as confirmed by health officials. A teenager from the Fraser Health region tested positive for the virus, with the test conducted at the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. The teen is being treated at BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver.

Dr. Bonnie Henry remarked, "This is a rare event," noting that while this is the first human case in Canada, there have been a few cases in the U.S. Previously, the source of exposure is under investigation.

Further analysis will be conducted at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg.
