Jeff Bezos creates AI start-Up
Jeff Bezos has co-founded Project Prometheus, a stealth A.I. startup focused on artificial intelligence for engineering and manufacturing computers, automobiles, and spacecraft. He will serve as co-chief executive alongside Vikram Bajaj, marking his first formal operational role since stepping down as Amazon CEO in July 2021.
The company has secured $6.2 billion in funding, partially from Bezos himself, positioning it among the best-capitalized early-stage startups globally, according to three people familiar with the matter who spoke anonymously as details remain private. Bajaj, a physicist and chemist, previously worked with Sergey Brin at Google’s X moonshot lab, co-founded Alphabet’s Verily life-sciences unit in 2015, and led Foresite Labs until recently departing to focus on Prometheus.
Project Prometheus has already hired nearly 100 employees, including researchers from OpenAI, DeepMind, and Meta. The startup targets A.I. that learns from the physical world to advance engineering and manufacturing, aligning with Bezos’s space ambitions through Blue Origin.Positioned in a growing field of companies applying A.I. to physical tasks and scientific discovery, Prometheus enters a competitive landscape dominated by giants like Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic, while aiming to accelerate complex real-world applications beyond large language models. Its location and exact founding date remain undisclosed.
