Australia won't join US blockade in Strait of Hormuz

SUMMARY

Australia will not support a U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, according to senior MPs. Labor MP Matt Thistlethwaite emphasized the government's preference for a negotiated settlement to achieve lasting peace and lower petrol prices.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that Australia has not been asked to participate in the blockade. He expressed a desire for resumed negotiations to end violence and restore trade in the Middle East.

Coalition Senator Jane Hume urged the government to assist the blockade, highlighting national interests in opening the strait to ensure fuel supply. Tensions escalated following unsuccessful talks between the U.S. and Iran.

President Trump announced the Navy's blockade order after the talks failed.
