GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski comes out against Trump's election bill

Sen. Lisa Murkowski has opposed the SAVE Act, an election bill backed by Trump that requires proof of citizenship to vote. She noted Republicans had previously opposed federal election laws during Biden's term, stating, “I do not support these efforts.”

Murkowski emphasized that the Constitution allows states to manage their elections. Under current laws, voters must attest to their citizenship, but the SAVE Act would impose new requirements on states.

She warned that these federal mandates could harm election integrity, saying, “Imposing new federal requirements now... would negatively impact election integrity.”

Republicans had opposed the Democrats’ voting rights legislation in 2021 and 2022, insisting that elections must remain a state matter.
