China's Xi contacts Trump to discuss Taiwan and Ukraine
President Trump accepted an invitation from China's Xi Jinping to visit Beijing in April. The invitation came after a call where they discussed U.S.-China trade issues, including China's soybean purchases, and geopolitical topics like Ukraine and Taiwan. Trump described the call as “very good” and noted progress on commitments made during a previous summit in South Korea.
Xi emphasized the importance of Taiwan's return to China. Despite a truce in trade tensions, there are concerns about China's fulfillment of commitments, particularly regarding soybean purchases. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins noted China has only bought 1.5 million metric tons of soybeans since October, falling short of the agreed 12 million.
Debates are ongoing in the Trump administration about selling advanced A.I. technology to China, with decisions pending.
