US House calls on Trump to halt the war with Iran

The House narrowly passed a resolution Thursday to halt U.S. military action in Iran, delivering a second warning to President Donald Trump as the war escalates and its endgame grows murkier.

The 214-208 vote, which would require congressional approval to continue the war, came as the Senate prepared to take up a similar measure. Both are largely symbolic, but Democrats forced them as a signal that Trump's support on Capitol Hill is eroding, with lawmakers in both parties now questioning where the administration is headed.

Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who led the resolution on the House floor, said the war has had no clear mission, no strategy and no end goal.

A handful of Republicans crossed over to back the measure, though the vast majority voted to continue the war and cede congressional war powers to Trump. The president has insisted that continued strikes on Iran do not signal a return to full-scale war or a long-term commitment.

The airstrikes continue with little visible diplomatic progress. Both sides remain dug in over the Strait of Hormuz, still largely closed, and the disruption is pushing fuel prices higher ahead of midterm elections this fall.
