OpenAI says CEO Sam Altman's house was targeted with a Molotov cocktail

SUMMARY

San Francisco police arrested a 20-year-old man early Friday after he allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s home and made threats at the company’s San Francisco headquarters.

The first incident occurred around 4:12 a.m. in the North Beach neighborhood. The suspect hurled an incendiary device at Altman’s residence, setting fire to the exterior gate. He then fled on foot.

Around 5:07 a.m. the same individual appeared outside OpenAI headquarters on the 1400 block of 3rd Street and threatened to burn down the building.

Officers recognized him as the suspect from the residential attack and detained him immediately.

OpenAI confirmed both targeted incidents in a statement. “Thankfully, no one was hurt,” the company said.

“We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe. The individual is in custody, and we're assisting law enforcement with their investigation.”

Police dispatcher audio explicitly referenced a “Molotov cocktail slash sticky bomb” thrown at “the gate of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI’s residence.”

The case remains an open investigation. Charges are pending.
