One in three citizens apply for climate change visa to Australia

SUMMARY

More than a third of Tuvalu's citizens have applied for a new climate visa that allows permanent migration to Australia. Since its opening on June 16, there have been 1,124 applications, totaling 4,052 people including families, in a country of 10,643. The program offers 280 visas annually via a random ballot. Successful applicants receive indefinite residency, access to Medicare, childcare aid, and educational opportunities.

This visa is part of the Australia-Tuvalu Falepili Union, aiming to support Tuvalu against climate threats. Prime Minister Feleti Teo highlighted the program's historic recognition of Tuvalu's sovereignty. Scientists predict Tuvalu may be largely submerged by 2050 due to rising sea levels.
