American Water says it was hit with cyberattack

SUMMARY

A New Jersey water company serving over 14 million people experienced a cyberattack that mainly affected its billing systems.

American Water Works Company discovered the attack on October 3, reporting no impact on water services. Cyberattacks on water facilities have risen, prompting warnings from the White House about vulnerabilities in over 170,000 U.S. water systems.

The Environmental Protection Agency faces criticism for the sector's lack of cybersecurity measures. In response to the threats, the EPA plans to increase water security inspections and require annual risk assessments. American Water assures customers that services will not be interrupted during recovery efforts.
