Former NASCAR driver's plane in fatal crash

SUMMARY

A plane owned by former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle crashed at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina, resulting in fatalities. The Cessna C550 went down around 10:20 a.m. with six passengers on board, during landing, igniting a fire on or near the runway. Emergency crews responded swiftly to the scene.

Iredell County Sheriff Grant Campbell confirmed fatalities but did not disclose the number or identities of those aboard. The aircraft, registered to GB Aviation Leasing, was scheduled to fly to Sarasota, Florida but attempted to return to Statesville shortly after takeoff.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident, which has attracted national attention due to the airport's role in corporate aviation and motorsports. Further details will be provided as investigations continue.
