Germany to buy 15 more F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin for about €2.5B

SUMMARY

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius plans to order 15 additional F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin, costing approximately 2.5 billion euros ($2.9 billion), as confirmed by a parliamentary source.

Germany has previously ordered 35 F-35s to replace its ageing Tornado jets, which will be decommissioned. The new aircraft will be used to carry U.S. nuclear bombs if needed.

Earlier, Germany denied plans for more F-35s, but an expanded defence budget has opened up possibilities. This potential purchase could heighten tensions with France, which is involved in a troubled fighter jet project with Germany.
