Rare blood moon total lunar eclipse in 2025

SUMMARY

Sky-gazers can look forward to a total lunar eclipse on the night of September 7-8, 2025, where the moon will appear blood red for over an hour. This phenomenon occurs as Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the lunar surface.

Regions in Asia, Africa, eastern Europe, and western Australia will see the full eclipse, while others, including parts of Spain and Norway, will see only a partial eclipse. Though North and South America won't experience the eclipse, a bright "Corn Moon" will be visible.

The eclipse will start at 11:28 a.m. ET and last over five hours, with totality reaching 1:30 p.m. ET. Sunlight bending through Earth's atmosphere causes the red hue, a result of longer wavelengths refracting onto the moon. The next total lunar eclipse will occur on March 3, 2026.
