Chinese EVs drive Africa's green transition
SUMMARY
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are increasing investments across Africa, promoting a shift toward clean mobility. BYD plans to expand its South African dealerships from 20 to 30-35 by next year. The company is also collaborating with BasiGo in Kenya to enhance local EV assembly and infrastructure. Meanwhile, BAIC aims to operate a factory in Egypt, producing 50,000 units annually within five years.
As Dennis Wakaba notes, “China is a key supplier of EVs to Africa.” The region could see significant emissions reductions by transitioning to EVs, meeting growing demand from African consumers. However, limited incentives and charging infrastructure may slow growth in EV sales in the short term.
