Colombia's Clan del Golfo commander dies in 'river accident'

Jose Gonzalo Sanchez, the second-in-command of Colombia's Clan del Golfo crime gang, died when his boat capsized on the Esmeralda River. The incident occurred while he was promoting a peace process with the government.

The illegal armed group confirmed his death in a statement.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Peace expressed hope that this event would not disrupt ongoing peace talks.

Clan del Golfo, the largest illegal group in Colombia, was labeled a terrorist organization by the U.S. in December.

These talks are part of President Gustavo Petro's effort to achieve peace after decades of conflict.
