Germany sends soldiers to Greenland

SUMMARY

Germany plans to send soldiers to Greenland this week.. Initially, a preliminary group of Bundeswehr personnel will be dispatched. The German defense ministry has not confirmed or denied this information. Reports suggest the mission could start as early as Thursday, coinciding with Denmark's announcement to increase its military presence in the region.

The deployment will be coordinated from Copenhagen rather than through NATO, indicating a shift in operational command. The Nordic states in NATO, including Greenland, are subject to the NATO command in Norfolk, USA. The operation will run without the United States. In Germany, the Ministry of Defense and the Chancellor’s Office are involved.

Swedish troops are already heading to Greenland for exercises. Sweden's Prime Minister noted, “Some officers of the Swedish armed forces are arriving” to collaborate on a joint exercise.
