EU Health ministers call for a cap on ''super sperm donors' over ethical concerns

SUMMARY

The EU is considering capping sperm donations amid ethical concerns over "super sperm donors" who father many children across borders. Six EU countries proposed a register to track sperm donors, highlighting risks of accidental incest and hereditary diseases from large numbers of half-siblings.

High-profile cases, like Pavel Durov, who has over 100 children, have raised alarms. Belgian health minister Frank Vandenbroucke stated, “It is unacceptable that children or parents have to discover through genetic testing that they could have 70 or more half-siblings.” Current laws vary by country, prompting calls for a Europe-wide policy.
