Slovenia referendum rejects new law to legalise assisted dying

SUMMARY

Slovenia held a referendum in which 53% of voters chose to suspend a law legalizing assisted dying. Only 47% supported the law, leading to a one-year halt on its implementation.

The law was initially approved by parliament after a 2024 referendum. However, a campaign led by a civil group, backed by the Catholic Church, gathered enough signatures to trigger the new vote.

Ales Primc, the head of Voice for the Children and the Family, stated that “solidarity and justice” had won with this outcome. Therefore, the parliament cannot revisit this issue for the next 12 months.
