Mattell launches new diabetic Barbie with insulin pump and glucose monitor

SUMMARY

Mattel has introduced a new Barbie doll that portrays a Type 1 diabetic, complete with an insulin pump and glucose monitor. This addition aims to provide representation for young people with diabetes.

The new brunette Barbie is part of a series addressing criticisms about inclusivity, following the release of dolls with various disabilities. Mattell has previously released a blind Barbie, Barbie with Down’s syndrome, Barbie with hearing aids, Barbie in a wheelchair and Barbie with a prosthetic limb.

Notable collaborations include British model Lila Moss, who helped design the diabetes doll in her likeness. Moss, diagnosed with diabetes at 12, expressed the significance of this doll for representation: “Raising awareness for [type 1 diabetes] has always been really important to me.” The doll serves both as a fashion item and a symbol of confidence for those with the condition.
