Israel carries out airstrikes in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria, killing at least 10 people

Israel conducted airstrikes on Monday in Gaza, southern Lebanon, and southern Syria, killing at least 10 people, including a child, according to local authorities. The Israeli military claimed it targeted militants planning attacks. In Gaza, strikes hit Bureij, killing a man and his nephew in a school shelter and three men allegedly collecting firewood, though Israel said they were planting explosives.

Israel has blocked supplies to Gaza for two weeks, demanding Hamas alter their ceasefire terms. In Syria, Israel seized a southern zone post-Assad’s fall, striking Daraa and killing three, wounding 19, targeting Assad’s former military sites. In Lebanon, strikes killed two Hezbollah members in Yohmor, with further hits on unspecified Hezbollah sites.

Ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon, mediated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, remain fragile. Since mid-January, Israel has killed dozens of Palestinians approaching troops. The Gaza ceasefire’s first phase swapped hostages, but Israel now seeks half the remaining hostages for a truce promise, while Hamas insists on the original deal’s next phase, involving full hostage release and Israeli withdrawal. Hamas holds 24 living hostages and 35 bodies. The Israeli military stated, “The materials’ presence posed a threat to Israel,” regarding Syrian strikes.
