NPR sues Trump over federal cuts

SUMMARY

NPR and other public radio organizations have sued President Trump over his executive order aimed at ending federal funding for NPR and PBS. The lawsuit claims the order violates the Constitution and First Amendment protections. It stresses that "the president has no authority under the Constitution to take such actions.”

Trump's order freezes more than $500 million in annual funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. While only about 2 percent of NPR's budget comes from federal grants, these funds support local stations and programming.

Trump criticized NPR and PBS as “biased,” claiming taxpayer money should support "fair, accurate, unbiased and nonpartisan news coverage." NPR's CEO, Katherine Maher, emphasized the importance of public media in American civic life.
