EU auto groups push for change to 'no longer feasible' car CO2 targets

European automobile and automotive supply leaders said the EU's goals for cutting CO2 emissions for cars by 2035 are unrealistic. They face challenges like reliance on Asian battery supplies, high production costs, and U.S. tariffs. The manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz, have stated their commitment to the EU's 2050 net zero goal, but they need flexibility beyond strict vehicle emission targets.

As they put it, “Meeting the rigid car and van CO2 targets for 2030 and 2035 is, in today’s world, simply no longer feasible.” Alternatives like hybrids and decarbonized fuels should be included in the transition strategy.
