Iran says it's close to resolving gas export issues with Iraq
SUMMARY
Iran and Iraq are nearing a solution to disputes over Iranian gas supply disruptions and unpaid debts. Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad announced the progress after meeting Iraq’s Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadhil in Tehran.
The gas shortfall has hindered Iraqi electricity production during peak summer demand. To compensate, Iran has turned to burning mazut in its power plants, which could enable more gas for export.
Despite having significant natural gas reserves, Iran has faced challenges in meeting domestic needs and maintaining steady exports. Last year, Iran extended its gas export agreement with Iraq for five years, allowing for seasonal adjustments.
