Sri Lanka to pursue Britain for colonial-era losses

Sri Lanka aims to hold Britain accountable for colonial-era losses and is seeking the return of cultural artifacts, according to Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath. Responding to opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, Herath emphasized the need for compensation relating to property damage and loss of life during British colonial rule (1796-1948). Notable objects sought by Sri Lanka include an eighth-century bronze statue of the goddess Tara, currently in the British Museum.

Sri Lanka recently received artefacts from the Netherlands, highlighting ongoing restitution efforts. However, officials acknowledge that complexity in recovering private collections may hinder their claims. While some support these efforts, others worry it may distract from the nation's economic challenges.
