Commission approves new Bank of America role for EU's Musk nemesis Breton

SUMMARY

The European Commission has allowed Thierry Breton, former Commissioner for the Internal Market, to accept an advisory role at Bank of America, despite a two-year cooling-off requirement for ex-commissioners. The Commission stated, “Former Commissioner Breton’s envisaged post term of office activity… is compatible with Article 245 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.”

However, some, like German MEP Daniel Freund, question if this position constitutes lobbying. Breton maintains his role is limited to “three meetings a year” and insists he will avoid any lobbying related to his previous duties. The Commission faces ongoing scrutiny over its revolving door policies and previous controversies involving former officials.
