Japan's LDP elects Takaichi as new leader, likely to be first female PM
SUMMARY
Sanae Takaichi has been elected to lead Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), likely making her the first female prime minister. She defeated Shinjiro Koizumi in a run-off vote. Takaichi, 64, is known for her right-wing stance and previously served as the economic security minister.
A parliamentary vote is set for October 15. The LDP, which has dominated since 1955, must regain public trust amid concerns over immigration and economic issues. Takaichi has emphasized a need to "reconsider policies that allow in people with completely different cultures."
If elected, she will also face challenges like an aging population and international relations.
