Canada lifts sanctions on Syria

SUMMARY

Canada has removed Syria from its list of states supporting terrorism and revoked the terrorist designation of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). This decision follows HTS's ousting of Bashar al-Assad and aligns with actions by allies like the UK and US.

Canada originally labeled Syria as a state supporter of terrorism in 2012 amid Assad's crackdown on protests. While HTS had ties to Al-Qaeda, Western nations are easing sanctions to foster collaboration with Syria's new government under Ahmed al-Sharaa.

However, Canada still maintains sanctions on 56 individuals linked to the previous Assad regime.
