Brazil orders two cruise ships as hotels for the COP30 climate conference

SUMMARY

The Brazilian government has ordered two cruise ships, Costa Diadema and MSC Seaview, to Belém for the COP30 climate conference. Together, they consume 500,000 liters of diesel daily and emit over 1,200 tons of CO2.

These ships will serve as floating hotels from November 5 to 22, providing 10,066 beds. They will be docked at a port currently under construction, with a new pier and terminal projected to cost $35 million.

While the ships will enhance accommodation options, reliance on diesel generators remains unless shore power is available.
