Expensive surprise: Used electric cars lose massive value

SUMMARY

Resale values of electric cars are plummeting, with some losing up to 40% of their value within the first year. Sales of electric vehicles are stagnating in Europe, as rising costs lead many to lease rather than buy. High-end models like the Porsche Taycan and BMW i7 have seen drastic depreciation. For instance, a Taycan priced over €120,000 is now listed at about €86,000, a 30% drop.

Even smaller models like the Fiat 500e have significant depreciation. In contrast, Tesla's models show comparatively lower depreciation due to pricing transparency and consumer confidence in their electric vehicles.

This situation poses major challenges for manufacturers, as low used car values and high development costs create pressure on profits. The market for electric vehicles is facing serious obstacles with little relief in sight.
