IRS is drafting plans to cut as much as half of its workforce

The IRS plans to cut its workforce by up to 50% through layoffs, attrition, and incentivized buyouts. This move is part of the Trump administration's initiative led by Elon Musk to reduce the federal workforce.

Former IRS commissioner John Koskinen warned that cutting tens of thousands of employees would make the agency "dysfunctional." Currently, the IRS has about 90,000 employees, with significant representation of people of color and women.

Earlier this year, 7,000 probationary employees were laid off. Additionally, the IRS may lend staff to the Department of Homeland Security to support immigration enforcement efforts.
