Georgia officially bans same-sex adoption, marriage and LGBTQ in media

Georgia's parliament passed a sweeping anti-LGBTQ+ law, mirroring similar regulations in Russia. The law bans same-sex marriage, adoption by same-sex couples, and LGBTQ+ media endorsements. It stops gender-affirming care and changing gender markers on documents.

The ruling Georgian Dream party supported the legislation, despite opposition from President Salome Zourabichvili, who expressed concerns about marginalization and refused to sign the law. The Speaker of the Georgian parliament Shalva Papuashvili, on Thursday, signed the bill as a defense of national values. Critics argue that this law distracts from pressing issues like unemployment and healthcare. Others say, it promotes "traditional family values."
