Netherlands rations electricity while transitioning away from gas for green policies

The Netherlands is rationing electricity due to an overloaded power grid caused by a swift transition away from gas and towards renewable energy. Over 11,900 businesses and many new homes are waiting to connect to the grid, with delays expected until the 2030s.

Experts warn that countries like Britain, Belgium, and Germany should heed the situation as similar problems may arise. The Dutch government has halted gas production and pushed for electric heating and solar energy, but the grid is struggling to cope.

Electricity prices are among the highest in Western Europe, and households may see annual increases of up to 4.7%. Major industries might need to shut down for hours, while a public campaign advises against charging electric vehicles during peak hours.
