Pentagon officially declares Anthropic a 'supply-chain risk'

SUMMARY

The Pentagon has formally notified Anthropic that the company and its AI products are now officially designated a risk to the U.S. supply chain.

The designation took effect immediately. This classification is typically reserved for adversarial foreign entities.

The decision follows the collapse of contract negotiations between Anthropic and senior Pentagon officials. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had been negotiating with Under Secretary Emil Michael for weeks.

Talks broke down after Anthropic demanded written assurances that its models would never be used for mass domestic surveillance of American citizens or autonomous weapons deployment.

Until recently, Anthropic’s Claude Gov tool was the only AI system approved for the Pentagon’s classified cloud environment. It had become a favored platform across defense personnel for its ease of use.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth publicly labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk on X after the impasse.

A senior defense official stated the core issue is simple: the military will not allow any vendor to insert itself into the chain of command by restricting lawful use of critical technology.

“The military will not allow a vendor to insert itself into the chain of command by restricting the lawful use of a critical capability and put our warfighters at risk.”

The designation now severely restricts Anthropic’s access to military contracts and classified systems. It exposes deep national security concerns over private AI companies attempting to dictate terms on advanced systems vital to American defense.
