Japan's government to temporarily lift restrictions on coal-fired power plants

SUMMARY

Japan plans to temporarily lift coal-fired power plant restrictions to address an energy crunch caused by the Middle East war. The industry ministry confirmed this decision, stating it aims to ensure a stable energy supply amid rising uncertainty in liquefied natural gas (LNG) procurement.

Power plants have been limited to a 50% operating rate, but the government will allow full operations of older plants for one year starting in April. This shift could save approximately 500,000 tonnes of LNG.

However, experts warn this move might hinder Japan’s goal to phase out inefficient coal plants by 2030 and deepen fossil fuel dependence. Climate advocate Yoko Mulholland emphasized the need for Japan to transition to renewable energy.

Other Asian countries, like South Korea and the Philippines, are also increasing coal use amid energy disruptions.
