Australia sets out its action plan to eradicate anti-semitism nationwide
The special envoy to combat anti-semitism has unveiled a comprehensive action plan in Australia aimed at addressing hatred.
Jillian Segal emphasizes the involvement of parliaments and civil society, particularly the justice and education sectors, to ensure long-term progress. The 49-action plan across 13 areas are to address and eradicate anti-semitism with progress reports provided.
The action plan includes strengthening hate speech laws, creating a national hate crime database, mandatory education on holocaust history, monitoring media for misleading narratives about Jewish people, withholding government funding from universities that facilitate anti-semitic behavior, screening visa applicants for views, funding for promotion of Jewish heritage and history.
Key findings indicate that younger Australians exhibit more anti-semitic views, highlighting the importance of education in shaping attitudes. Additionally, social media is identified as a major platform for disseminating hate, especially among those under 35.
