Trump administration plans to cut 80,000 jobs from VA

SUMMARY

The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to cut over 80,000 workers to return to 2019 staffing levels of about 400,000. The memo from Chief of Staff Christopher Syrek aims to collaborate with Elon Musk's team to implement these reductions.

Senator Richard Blumenthal criticized the cuts, calling them "an all-out assault... attacking the VA workforce and the veterans it serves." He expressed concerns that the layoffs could pave the way for privatizing VA services.

Veterans groups have condemned the layoffs, arguing it betrays those who served. On the same day, a federal board temporarily halted some job cuts at the Department of Agriculture.
