Trump says Iran talks will happen 'very soon:' Vance might stay away over security concerns

SUMMARY

President Trump expects direct peace talks with Iran to take place in Pakistan “very soon.”

The summit, proposed by Pakistan for as early as Friday in Islamabad, follows the Tuesday cease-fire agreement that ended 39 days of fighting between the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Trump said the U.S. delegation will include special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Vice President JD Vance may not attend.

“We’ll have Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, JD —maybe JD, I don’t know. There’s a question of safety, security,” Trump told The Post.

The cease-fire framework is built on Iran’s 10-point counter-proposal, which Trump accepted as a tentative basis for a permanent deal. It includes Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping after its month-long closure. The broader resolution is expected to address Iran’s demand to impose tolls on vessels passing through the waterway.

Trump launched the war on February 28 alongside Israel with four core objectives: ending Iran’s nuclear program, destroying its navy, wrecking ballistic missile production sites, and cutting support for proxy groups.

Despite the cease-fire, the vice president’s potential absence underscores the extraordinary security risks still surrounding direct, high-level engagement with the Iranian regime.
